Don’t Give Up

April 29, 2010

The end of the semester means that summer is coming! Unfortunately, long gone are the summer days defined by tanning at the pool and running through sprinklers all day long. For me and many of my friends, the summer means one and only one thing: internships.

If I could only spend every summer in Hawaii...

I probably started searching for summer internships for this summer the second my internship last summer ended (I wish I was joking). I started applying over winter break and thankfully had one secured by the end of February. I’m finally living out my dream and living in New York while interning for a TV network! I got lucky. My best friend? Not so much.

She has the same major as me so we ended up applying to a lot of the same places. She just waited a bit too long and found herself facing rejection after rejection. Reading up on other blogs, I see a lot of people are facing the same kinds of issues. Whether you’re graduating from college and looking for that first job or still trying to figure out a summer internship, it can get to be really stressful and frustrating.

I’ve been by my friend’s side rubbing her back as tears stream down her face night after night. But today, I got the BBM of a lifetime when she said she finally got an acceptance and will be joining me in NYC! This was music to my ears and I could not be more happy for her.

So the moral of the story? Just don’t give up. Even when she thought all hope was lost, something good will come along! You just got to keep believing and trying and it will all turn out ok.

Question: What’s your strategy for coping with rejection? What advice do you have for those struggling with finding a job or internship?

Well, this comes in handy for me….I’m freaking out over internships, too. It’s really important to get experience in my field, but I NEED to be paid, dammit! Most internships just want free help, which really sucks. But I won’t give up! I’m amazing and those companies better pay me for being amazing for them! lol.
